Cocktail rings are a form of costume jewellery that became popular during the time of Prohibition. Women would wear colourful, oversized rings to attract attention to their illegal drink and to show their status. After Prohibition was repealed, cocktail parties were a good way to meet with friends and acquaintances during the 40’s and 50’s.
Since that time cocktail parties have become a more casual affair, and cocktail rings faded from the public’s consciousness. The cocktail ring is reborn on the runway and became a huge fashion statement. As the recession goes on and buying new clothes becomes a luxury, people stick to dressing simply and using accessories to stand out. For that reason rings are a trend that could last for a while, as well as the fact they are a lot cheaper than gemstone rings and less prone to theft.
